Description

An early 18th century threshing and storage barn, with alterations from the mid-19th century, stands at Mains of Balnagown, near Balnagown Castle. The barn is a 2-storey, 5-bay structure built of harled rubble with ashlar dressings and margins, and sits on boulder footings. Originally, paired, chamfered winnowing doors were present in the outer bays of both elevations, but these have now been blocked at the south end. Five small loft vents are visible on the first floor of each elevation, though some have been blocked. Later slit vents have been added to the ground floor, and there's a later louvred vent in the south gable. The roof is slate and features cavetto skewputts and crowsteps.

Inside, the barn has a doubled collared rafter roof, with ashlar posts and sole pieces located at wallhead, though most are now hidden by later beam filling. A crowstepped gighouse, dating from the mid to later 19th century, is attached to the north gable and features a centrally positioned, round-headed arched entrance. This gighouse is constructed of harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar margins, and has a slate roof. A byre range, also from the mid to later 19th century, extends from the south gable, built of harl pointed rubble with a louvred slate roof.
