Description
The Balnagown Railway Viaduct, dating from 1864 and engineered by Joseph Mitchell, is an imposing structure built to carry the railway line. It features a high, single span arch, accompanied by a smaller arch providing access over a carriage drive to the east. The viaduct is constructed from tooled ashlar stone with ashlar dressings. Notable features include chamfered ashlar arch rings, a string course, and a coped and crenellated parapet featuring paired armorial shields on both sides in the centre. These shields display the crests of the Cromarty and Sutherland families. An advertisement for tenders for the viaduct's construction appeared in the Inverness Advertiser on June 4, 1864.
