Description
East Lodge, built in 1889 by A. Maitland and Sons, is an Arts and Crafts style estate lodge of two storeys. It was originally constructed for the game-keeper and features kennels in the ground. The lodge comprises two asymmetrical bays, with a rectangular, two-storey block gabled to the right. The first floor of this block is jettied and supported by heavy consoles. A piended stair bay projects to the north, with the ground-floor entrance concealed behind a rustic porch. A single bay extension to the south connects to a small square kitchen, which appears to have previously served as a game larder. The ground floor is constructed of tooled sneck coursed red sandstone, while the upper storey has an imitation timber frame with tooled ashlar dressings. A datestone shaped like a shiel, bearing the initial “C” (for the Earl of Cromarty), the date 1889, and the Earl’s coronet, is present. The lodge stands on a secondary drive leading to Tarbat House. An advertisement for tenders appeared in the Inverness Courier on February 22, 1889.
