Description
These early 19th-century mills are a three-story, five-bay structure with a tall kiln rising the full height to the rear. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with bullfaced stone dressings and an ashlar wheel gable. The front elevation has two entrances and four windows on the ground floor, while the first and second floors feature a symmetrical five-bay fenestration. The windows have multi-pane glazing, with a blind lower section to each. The roof is slate-covered and has crowstepped gables, with two small wallhead vents on each side of the kiln, which also has a ridge ventilator. A single end stack is also present. An overshot water wheel is located on the east side, served by a nearby, largely ruined raised lade. The mills are referenced in the New Statistical Account of 1833-4 and in John Hume's The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland (1977).
