Description

The Ben Bhraggie Hotel, formerly Aberdeen Town and County Bank, dates from 1829 and 1886, comprising three linked ranges—two of two storeys and one of single storey and attic—creating an irregular building. The construction is mainly of coursed rubble, with tooled dressings and contrasting painted margins and reveals. The central portion, dated 1829, has three bays with a central door and three large gabled dormers featuring exaggerated scroll skewputts. Adjoining the north gable is a two-storey, three-bay block with enlarged ground floor windows and substantial stone brackets supporting a projecting roof at the gable ends. Inset within these brackets are Sutherland and Stafford coats of arms, also dated 1829. A further single-storey and attic range, dated 1886, is set back to the south. The windows are lying pane with margined and four-pane glazing. Octagonal corniced end stacks are present, along with slate roofs. A modern glazed single-storey entrance porch/sun lounge has been added in the south re-entrant angle. Dormer pediments are initialled MS and ES. Sutherland and Stafford Arms are inset at the front.
