Description
Dated 1896, 1 and 2 Drill Hall Cottages are a picturesque, asymmetrical pair of estate cottages, reflecting the influence of the Sutherland and Stafford Estates.
The cottages are constructed of red rubble stone with contrasting, tooled grey ashlar dressings. A decorative timber-framed gable is present on the first floor. The west elevation has four bays, with the entrance to No. 1 located in a shallow re-entrant angle formed by the north-west gabled bay, and the entrance to No. 2 in the south-west angle, with a projecting, deep gabled bay facing south. Windows are arranged as tripartite sashes on the ground floor and in the south first-floor gable; elsewhere they are bipartite, including a barge-boarded, gabletted dormer on the west face. Decorative wooden finials adorn the bargeboards of all gables. The windows are 8-pane sashes. There are corniced stacks at the sides, ends, and ridge of the roof, which is covered in red tiles.
