Description
The Sutherland Arms Hotel, dated 1808 with 19th-century additions, occupies a Z-shaped frontage on Old Bank Road in Golspie. The building is constructed of red rubble with contrasting tooled dressings.
The central section, dating to 1808, is two storeys and has an attic, with three bays arranged around a central doorway. Flanking this are lower, two-storey wings with two bays each. A projecting two-storey and attic extension, with three bays, is set at right angles to the main frontage and obscures the west wing. A three-bay wing sits to the rear of the east side, with a central doorway on the symmetrical east elevation. There are four piended dormers, largely featuring 12-pane glazing, and end and ridge stacks. The roofs are slate-covered.
Modern additions include a glazed sun porch and a covered way, which partially mask the building’s original frontage.
The hotel’s development is documented in James Loch’s “An Account of the Improvements on the Estates of Lord Stafford.”
