Description
Mains of Ulbster is a late 18th to early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house that faces south. The exterior is harled, with a central door that is obscured by a later square porch featuring a side entrance, a front window, and a piended slate roof. The ground floor windows have been enlarged at a later date, while the first floor retains its original 12-pane glazing. At the rear, there is a projecting wing with a lean-to extension in the re-entrant angle, and the house has end stacks topped with a Caithness slate roof.
Inside, the kitchen, located on the ground floor to the right of the entrance, features a framed lintel from a 17th century chimney piece, which displays the coat of arms of the Sinclairs of Ulbster, likely taken from an earlier house on the site. A simple drystone wall encloses the garden to the south of the house.
