Description
The Glenelg War Memorial is a 1920 memorial designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, with sculpture by Louis N Deuchars. The memorial comprises a simple stone pedestal topped by an 18-foot-high bronze group. The bronze sculpture depicts three colossal figures of a Cameron Highlander, accompanied by a kneeling female figure appealing to Peace. A bronze inscription panel is affixed to the front of the pedestal. The memorial is surrounded by a simple cast-iron railing. It stands near Glenelg Church of Scotland, overlooking Glenelg Bay. The memorial’s group value was elevated from Grade B to Grade A on 10 December 2003. Further information can be found in Peter Savage’s LORIMER AND THE EDINBURGH CRAFT DESIGNERS (1980), page 177, and through the Buildings of Scotland Research Unit.
