Description
Glenelg Village comprises two parallel terraces of 18th-century cottages, located in the main street. The terraces consist of six bays each, with four dwellings in each row. The buildings are all harled, except for number 4, which is built of painted rubble. The houses are two storeys high, displaying six symmetrical windows on the first floor. The two houses at the south end of the terrace each have three bays, originally with a central door, though these entrances are now largely obscured by later, projecting gabled porches. Most windows are fitted with four panes of glass, although some retain the original twelve-pane glazing. The roofs are covered in slate and feature regular ridge stacks. The buildings are believed to have served as officers' quarters for Bernera Barracks. The statutory address includes the Post Office, number 4 Glenelg, Miss Chisholm’s, and Drumfern, all formerly associated with the officers’ quarters and comprising a total of eight dwellings – four on each side of the road.
