Description
The farm steading at Dochfour House dates to 1872 and was built by Matthew and Lawrie, though it has undergone later additions and alterations. Originally a quadrangular arrangement of buildings, only three sides remain; the western range has been demolished and replaced with cattle pens.
The steading is constructed of mixed rubble with dressed ashlar detailing. A slightly projecting central bay rises as a square, three-storey tower with a battered base and chamfered corners. A central round-headed entrance gives access to the inner courtyard. Above, on the first floor, is a keystoned round-headed bipartite window, and on the second floor, a clock sits above a stepped string course. There are eight bays on either side, with round-headed keystoned arches in the central and outer bays. The central ones lead to the inner courtyard, the outer ones formerly served as carriage houses on the east side, with one now filled with a window facing west.
The windows are fitted with 4-pane glazing, and there are coped end and ridge stacks. The roofs are slate.
Internally, the tack room, a later milking parlour, and a grain loft are still present.
Further estate buildings, including a dairy located to the northeast, are listed separately. Contemporary newspaper references appear in the Inverness Courier of 23rd July 1874.
