Description
The estate lodge, entrance gate piers and gates, and policy walls date from around 1840. The entrance is marked by a pair of square, rusticated ashlar piers topped with cornices and ball finials, linked by a low retaining wall to matching end piers. A pair of spearhead cast-iron carriage gates complete the entrance.
The gate lodge is a simple, mid-19th century, single-storey, three-bay cottage with a single-bay addition slightly set back at the west gable. It is harled with painted, tooled ashlar margins. The central door has a double-leaf plank door, and features four-pane glazing. The lodge has coped end stacks and a slate roof with projecting eaves.
Also part of the estate are mid-19th century coped retaining walls, with various entrances. One entrance serves the Dochfour nursery garden at Kirkton and features a pair of square, tooled rubble piers with ashlar caps and ball finials, connected to similar end piers by stepped quadrants. A pair of wrought-iron carriage gates are present here.
