Description
The Gardener's Cottage, dating to around 1840, is a single-storey house with an attic, arranged in a T-shape with a long, prominent south-facing elevation. The exterior is harled (roughcast) with margins of finely tooled ashlar stone. The main entrance is in the centre of the rear gable, though it is now partially hidden by a later lean-to timber porch, which includes a side entrance and a large window with transoms (horizontal dividing bars) and mullions (vertical bars), featuring a lattice pane arrangement of glazing. A later bipartite window (two windows combined into one frame) has been added to the ground floor of the rear wing, alongside a single gabled dormer window above, likely dating from the late 19th century. The front elevation also has two gabled dormers and a later single-storey extension. The windows are generally fitted with 4-pane glazing. A coped ridge stack (a stack where the top of the chimney is shaped to resemble a coping) is present, and the slate roof projects at the eaves with simple bargeboards (ornamental boards along the eaves) that return at the gable angles to create the appearance of broken pediments. The cottage is currently part of the Dochfour Estate, though this has not always been the case.
Behind the cottage, on a south-facing slope, is a large walled garden constructed of rubble stone. The north wall is canted (curves outwards), with arched entrances on the east and west sides. The centre of the south wall is closed by a wrought-iron gate. A single-storey wing to the west was formerly the Factor's office for the Dochfour Estate.
