Description
The Bona Free Church is a rectangular church built around 1846, with alterations made in the later 19th century, probably in 1865. The church is harled (roughcast) with dressings of tooled ashlar stone, and the east gable is built of bullfaced rubble. A later 19th-century entrance is located in the east gable, featuring a spade-pointed head with a roll-moulded edge and a hoodmould that finishes with floreated stops. Three long windows with similar heads are located around the entrance. A simple bellcote sits at the apex of the roof. Two shallow, segmental-headed windows illuminate the north and south elevations. A Minster’s porch with an end chimney stack and a piended roof projects from the centre of the south side. The west gable’s window arrangement is partially obscured by a later, single-storey, gabled wing. The windows are fitted with square leaded glass, and the roofs are slate.
The church is surrounded by a burial ground containing 18th and 19th-century tombstones. A pair of square ashlar gate piers, dated 1865, with inscriptions and pedimented caps mark the entrance. Matching spearhead carriage gates and spearhead railings, also dating from 1865, run along the low, coped stone burial ground wall.
The Free Church was built on the site of an earlier Church of Scotland building and remains in ecclesiastical use. The gate piers were gifted by Evan Cameron in 1865, who also repaired the church and burial ground. Originally listed in 1971, the church and its burial ground are considered to have group value.
