Description
The Bona Free Church and its churchyard date from approximately 1846, with alterations made in the later 19th century, likely around 1865. The church is a plain, rectangular building with long north and south elevations. It is harled, with dressings of tooled ashlar, and has a gable of bullfaced rubble at its east end. A later 19th-century entrance is located in the east gable and features a spade-pointed head with roll-moulded arrises, a hoodmould terminating in floreated stops. Three long windows with similar heads flank the entrance. A simple bellcote sits at the apex of the roof. Two shallow, segmental-headed, narrow windows light the north and south elevations. A Minster’s porch with an end stack and piended roof projects from the centre of the south elevation. The west gable’s fenestration is partially obscured by a later, single-storey, gabled wing. The windows have square leaded glazing, and the roofs are slate.
The churchyard contains 18th and 19th-century tombstones. A pair of square ashlar gate piers, with inscriptions and pedimented caps dated 1865, mark the entrance. Matching spearhead carriage gates and spearhead railings, also dated 1865, rise from the low, coped burial ground wall.
The church is an ecclesiastical building and remains in use as a place of worship. It was built on the site of an earlier Church of Scotland. The gate piers were gifted by Evan Cameron in 1865, who also repaired both the church and the burial ground. The site was originally listed in 1971.
