Description
The site includes a house and steading, both located near Glenshiel. The house dates to 1833/34, with later repairs and alterations carried out in 1865 by Alexander Ross. It is a two-storey, three-bay house built over a raised basement. The exterior is harled with tooled margins. The central bay slightly projects and features a pediment on the southeast front, which has a secondary door giving access to the basement and later-added bipartite windows to the ground and first floors. The main entrance is on the northwest elevation, approached by shallow steps with a cast-iron handrail. The windows have 8 and 16 panes, and the roof is covered with slate and features twin ridge stacks.
The steading dates to 1825 and has a shallow V-plan, incorporating a stable, two cart-sheds, byres in the southern arm, and a five-bay hay/threshing barn to the north, with its long elevations oriented east-west. The central threshing doors are flanked by paired louvred vents, with a similar vent on the north gable. The threshing floor has divided winnowing doors. Tie-beams were omitted above the threshing floor to allow for the swing of a flail. The 1865 alterations appear to have moved the house entrance to what was previously the rear. An earlier manse was destroyed by fire in 1833. Historic records, including newspaper advertisements and the New Statistical Account, document the construction and alterations.
