Description
This is a late 19th-century double villa, situated at 54 Langside Drive in Glasgow. The building is symmetrical and comprises two storeys and six bays. It is constructed with snecked and stugged cream sandstone, accented by red ashlar dressings. A rock-faced base course, cill course to the first floor, a decorative frieze, and eaves course are also present. Mullioned windows characterize the facade.
The east (front) elevation features slated bows with brattishing in the second and fifth bays from the left. Recessed outer bays house a porch and stair, each with steps leading to a round-arched, bolection moulded doorway with timber-panelled and glazed doors, flanked by narrow margin lights. A canted tripartite window sits above the doorways, and a large round-arched stair window is located on the gable returns. Tripartite windows are prominent in the inner bays on the ground floor and the second and fifth bays on the first floor, while bipartite windows are located in the inner bays on the first floor.
The west (rear) elevation includes small, single-storey, two-bay jerkin-headed piended wings projecting from the outer bays on the ground floor. Bipartite windows dominate each floor, and a Mansard dormer is located on the roof between chimney stacks.
The glazing mostly consists of plate glass in timber sash and case windows. Stained glass is incorporated into some upper sashes, particularly in the stair windows. The roof is predominantly piended slate with bracketed eaves. Battered, corniced stone stacks are topped with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods include ornamental hoppers and brackets.
The interior of the south bow (the Music Room) features Pre-Raphaelite-style stained glass figures of musicians in the upper sashes of the windows (circa 1898), potentially based on designs created for McCulloch and Co. by David Gould. Notable fittings include corniced doorcases, a timber chimneypiece flanked by glass-fronted cabinets with stained glass floral panels over recessed seats, and a broad frieze depicting stencilled maidens in stylized bowers with ceramic/glass bosses, in a style reminiscent of Jessie M King. Strapwork-style plasterwork adorns the ceiling. The north bow has similar woodwork and friezes, with simpler stylized stained glass floral motifs. Adjoining ground floor rooms contain stained glass with Germanic-style portrait head roundels. The south stair boasts stylised woodwork and plasterwork swag friezes; the large round-arched stair window, designed by Harrington Mann (circa 1898), depicts a harvest scene with classical maidens carrying fruit, accompanied by an inscription. An adjacent window features a painted glass oval portraying a Continental picturesque street-scene. The north stair's round-arched window features stained glass depicting a galleon, possibly designed by E A Taylor. More restrained Glasgow-style details are continued in the upstairs bedrooms.
A low, coped ashlar garden wall runs along Langside Drive and rises into stylized buttresses at two pairs of corniced gatepiers (one renewed). Walls enclose the rear garden. An early 20th-century timber-framed garage is located on the north side of the house.
