Description

Dated 1885. Sundial with extravagant mannerist ornament, one of perhaps 3 19th century replicas made of the identical pair of sundials erected at Newbattle in 1635. Ashlar. Sundial proper is a massive octagonal block, with crests and 2 tiers of dials, held by 4 grittins above panelled octagonal base on concentric stepped plinth. Decorative tall obelisk finial on 4 balls above elaborate consoled support.
