Description

The sundial at Aikenhead House, located on Carmunnock Road in Glasgow, dates back to 1885. It features extravagant mannerist ornamentation and is one of possibly three 19th century replicas of a pair of sundials originally erected at Newbattle in 1635. The sundial itself is a large octagonal block with crests and two tiers of dials, supported by four grittins above a panelled octagonal base on a concentric stepped plinth. At the top, there is a decorative tall obelisk finial resting on four balls, which is held up by an elaborate consoled support.
