Description

Cathcart Old Parish Church and Hall, located on Carmunnock Road in Glasgow, is a Gothic church designed by H E Clifford, with construction beginning in 1914 but interrupted by the War. The building was completed by Watson Salmond and Gray and opened in 1929. It features a free-standing design with a square tower at the west end, which contains the chancel. The walls are constructed of bull-faced snecked grey ashlar with polished dressings, showing slight variations in stone color, particularly at the tower, indicating where construction was paused. The church has a lofty buttressed lower stage and a squat upper stage with a crenellated parapet. A tall transept and a massive porch are positioned at opposing ends of the south front, with a blind low side aisle in between, its buttresses continuing onto the main wall. The roof is slated.

Inside, the church has a simplified hammer-beam roof and two tall pointed arches that open into the ungalleried south transept. The aisle arcades are present, and the low north transept was converted in 1962 by T J Beveridge to create the MacKellar memorial chapel. Notable interior features include an octagonal stone pulpit and leaded glass windows, some created by Douglas Hamilton and R Anning Bell. There is a gallery at the east end with a panelled front that has simplified Art Nouveau detailing similar to that of St James' church. The low range of buildings includes a session house, vestry, and other rooms, with interior walls faced in brick.

The church is set behind a stone-built low boundary wall, which includes gatepiers and wrought iron gates.
