Description

The building at 44-72 James Watt Street in Glasgow is a tall classical warehouse, likely designed by J Stephen between 1847 and 1848. It stands four storeys high with a full-height attic that was added in 1881, and features nine bays. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with the ground floor channelled and raised on a plinth.

The three central bays are slightly advanced, and four Doric pilasters extend through the first, second, and third floors, supporting a very deep entablature and a pediment. The central entrance, which has been altered, is square-headed, while the two flanking openings, originally arched and voussoired, have been filled with flat lintels. The original attic storey is adorned with a frieze. The outer bays feature segmental-headed windows on the ground floor with voussoirs, and the original attic windows are set in panels, with giant pilasters at the outer corners. The later attic windows have architraves, and the building is topped with a slate roof.

Inside, the basement has fireproof jack-arch construction, with cast-iron and timber beams above.
