Description

The Bandstand and Amphitheatre in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow, was built by the Glasgow Public Parks Department in 1924, with later alterations. This single-storey, three-bay bandstand is designed in a cross-plan and is situated at the foot of a near oval-shaped amphitheatre. It features whitewashed harl with red brick dressings, a base course, a corniced string course, and overhanging timber bracketed eaves.

On the northwest (front) elevation, there is a recessed three-bay raked stage at the center, with a timber door at the rear and timber doors in the angled corners to the left and right. Ionic columns frame the opening. Inside, there is boarded timber dado panelling and a boarded timber combed ceiling. The full-width platform projects to the front, topped by a scroll-bracketed canopy. At the center, there is a tapering square-plan ridge vent with a domed cupola and decorative finial. The northeast (side) elevation is a blind elevation to the principal block, with a projecting platform and canopy recessed to the outer right and a gabled projection recessed to the outer left. The southeast (rear) elevation features a three-bay gabled projection at the center, with a two-leaf timber door at the ground level and flanking single windows. The principal block is set behind, with basement openings recessed to the outer left and right and single windows above. The southwest (side) elevation is also a blind elevation to the principal block, with a projecting platform and canopy recessed to the outer left and a gabled projection recessed to the outer right. The roof is covered with red tiles and features tiled brattishing. The interior was not seen in 1999.

In front of the bandstand, there is a stepped, near oval-shaped amphitheatre.
