Description
The Anatomical Building at the University of Glasgow was designed by John Burnet & Son, with consultant John Oldrid Scott, and constructed between 1900 and 1901. It was later extended by the same architects in 1908 and further extended to the rear by Dorward, Matheson, Gleave & Partners in 1977. This building serves as a teaching and research facility for the Anatomy Department and features a single-storey front range and two-storey rear blocks, showcasing Scottish Renaissance and Baronial architectural styles.
The building has a deep, nearly rectangular plan and is constructed from squared and snecked, stugged blond sandstone with ashlar dressings, a plinth, and a parapet. The west elevation features a simple recessed architraved entrance with a commemorative panel above, which is partially concealed by a later building. There is a balustrade over the entrance, a bipartite window to the left, and a strapwork pedimented window above. The crowstepped gable includes a stack. The northeast elevation consists of five bays, with the west gable mirroring the west elevation on the first floor, featuring simple ground floor windows and a first-floor glazed cat-slide roof supported by ashlar piers. Small turrets are located to the east and west of the eastern three-bay section, while the eastern return is plain.
The interior, as seen in 1988, includes a columned, galleried top-lit Anatomical Museum and a lecture theatre with raked seating.
