Description

Pearce Lodge, located at the University of Glasgow on University Avenue, was designed by architect and civil engineer A G Thomson in 1887. This two-storey and attic building has a rectangular plan and features a Baronial style, along with a single-storey former Janitor's House attached to the south. A conical-roofed stair tower is positioned at the northwest angle, and decorative sculptural fragments from the demolished Old College on High Street are incorporated into the exterior. The building is constructed of polished and droved ashlar sandstone, with a base course, eaves cornice, and architraved openings topped with strapwork pediments.

On the north elevation facing University Avenue, there is an arched entrance to a loggia with a rusticated surround, accompanied by two similarly styled windows to the right. The first floor features an elaborately sculpted pedimented panel flanked by semi-engaged urns, with two additional windows to the right that also have strapwork pediments and a massive corbel table in front, along with similar dormers above. The east gable includes an inscribed panel, while the northwest stair tower has dormers and a pepperpot roof. The east elevation showcases an arcaded loggia and windows with a corbel table above, leading to a crow-stepped gable with an eaves course and window. The south elevation presents an arched entrance set in relieving pilasters to the loggia, with a carved panel above; it features regularly placed strapwork pedimented windows and dormers, and the lower single-storey building to the south has similarly detailed rusticated quoins and skewputts. The west elevation displays a crow-stepped gable with similar detailing and a rope moulding date panel reading "ANN DOM 1658," along with tall, narrow corniced gable stacks.

The windows are small-pane timber, with some being sash and case and others fixed pane with top hoppers. The roof is pitched slate with crow-stepped gables and tall offset diamond-plan stacks.

Inside, as seen in 2010, the original room plan remains largely intact. Most rooms feature simple cornicing, and there is a stone spiral stair. The large attic teaching room has a braced timber roof structure, timber lining boards, a plain timber fireplace (which is blocked), and a decorative iron vent.
