Description

74 Oakfield Avenue in Glasgow is a classical terrace house built around 1855, with later additions by architect J J Burnet for himself at No. 70 University Avenue in 1891. The building is two stories high with a partial basement and features a 19-bay design, although No. 74 is a 4-bay house with its entrance located in the second bay from the right. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar stone, with a channelled ground floor, a band course at the ground floor, a cill course at the first floor, and a cornice with a pierced parapet. There are small single-storey service wings at the rear.

The entrance elevation has alternating right and left entries, each accessed by steps. The south elevation, which returns to 70 University Avenue, has a 3-bay design with a central entrance and a single-storey canted wing to the west, which is channelled and corniced with a piended roof.

The windows are timber sash and case, primarily with 8-pane glazing. The roof is slated with valley sections and features stair cupolas, along with mutual stacks.

The interior of No. 70 University Avenue and No. 80 Oakfield Avenue, which were partially visible in 2010, includes decorative plasterwork with cornices in the principal rooms, cast-iron balusters on the stairs, panelled doors, and a painted glass fanlight at No. 80 Oakfield Avenue. The vestibule doors at No. 70 University Avenue are made of clear and pale leaded glass, designed in the style of Oscar Paterson.

The property also includes gatepiers at No. 70 University Avenue, which are coped, as well as droved ashlar retaining walls with coping (though the railings are missing) along Oakfield Avenue, and rubble boundary walls along University Avenue.
