Description
Wellington Church, located at 76 University Avenue in Glasgow, is a large Greek Revival church designed by T L Watson and built between 1882 and 1884. It features a prominent temple-fronted façade on a sloping site, raised on a podium to the east. The exterior is constructed of polished ashlar with a rock-faced base.
The church has a hexastyle fluted Corinthian portico topped with a pediment, which is approached by a double return staircase flanked by piers and die walls. The plain frieze is accented by a dentil band, a mutule cornice, and a parapet. The main entrance consists of three doors, with the central one being taller, all framed with architraves and cornices, and adorned with sculpted friezes.
On the east return elevation, there is a Corinthian colonnade in antis, with recessed glazing featuring pilaster architraved aisle lights and arcaded gallery windows that have a continuous moulded frieze band. A cornice separates the floors, and there are moulded cill bands. The basement lights are arched and feature voussoirs.
The west return elevation mirrors the east elevation and includes rear halls attached to the north, featuring a pillared anta portico set in a re-entrant angle. The five bays facing north are two storeys high, with pilastered windows on both the ground and first floors. The ground floor has a moulded plinth cornice and a cill band on the first floor. The rear return elevation is constructed of snecked rubble. The property is enclosed by a boundary wall with piers and cast-iron railings.
Inside, the church features a columned gallery with a panelled front, timber pews, fittings, and furniture, along with pilastered walls. The ceiling is adorned with a tripartite waggon roof that includes plaster compartments.
