Description
The Hunter Memorial, located on University Avenue in Glasgow, was designed by Sir John James Burnet (of Burnet Son and Dick) between 1923 and 1925, with sculpture work by George Henry Paulin. This memorial honors William and John Hunter and is designed in a U-shape, featuring a cenotaph at its center. The structure has long, low wings that embrace a raised platform and is constructed from polished ashlar sandstone.
The central cenotaph includes a sculpture of St Kentigern and features an inlaid bronze memorial text that reads: 'In gratam memoriam fratrum de scientia naturali et medendi arte optime meritorum Gulielmi 1718-1783 et Johannis 1728-1793 Hunter quorum uterque famae venator aeternaehic collegium chirugorum Londini regium ille Glasguae almnus idem et ditator matrem studiorum universitatem musaeo condito ornavit.' The flanking wings of the memorial contain medallion portraits of William and John Hunter, along with lower flanking walls.
