Description
The monument to William Hunter, located 16 meters north-west of Newnum House, is a Grade II listed structure erected in 1861. It commemorates William Hunter, who was burnt at the stake in 1555 at the age of 19, condemned by Bishop Bonner. The monument features a needle obelisk set on a square base with three progressively broader stages, all having upper chamfered edges. It is made of pink granite for the upper part and green granite for the lower stages, standing on a York stone platform. The monument was restored in 1910 after being defaced by fire. It is part of a group that includes Newnum House, Roden House, Mitre House, Old House, and The Hermitage.
