Description
The Parish Social Club is a Roman Catholic chapel built in 1837, with a south aisle added around 1845. It was converted into a school in 1861 and later transformed into a Parish Hall in 1969. The building is constructed of gault brick laid in Flemish bond and features an asbestos slate roof installed in 1991. The chapel has a preaching box plan.
On the exterior, the south aisle includes six 2-light transomed casements with arched heads, each set within a square-headed surround that has a hoodmould with label stops. The lower west window lacks a transom, and the eastern two bays are set back. There are shallow stepped side buttresses between the larger windows and crenellated parapets. The building also has three clerestory windows and a hipped roof.
The east front, which is liturgically the west, is flanked by octagonal turrets topped with elongated lead domed caps and slit lights to the drum, along with two set-offs. The central entrance features double-leaf 2-panelled doors within an arched double-chamfered architrave, which includes a three-vaned fanlight and is topped by a hoodmould on stiff-leaf stops. Above this is a triple stepped lancet under a pointed arch. There is a similar doorway to the south aisle beneath a segmental arch, and a balancing screen front to the north with an opening for a doorway.
The north elevation mirrors the south aisle with three casements but without transoms, separated by heavier stepped side buttresses. To the west, there is a single-storey crenellated vestry with a smaller 2-light window.
The canted east end has three facets, each fitted with 2-light arched windows. Side buttresses and a cornice rise over the east window. The interior was undergoing refitting and refurbishment at the time of the survey and does not contain notable features.
