Description
The School House at Brentwood School is a building that dates back to 1773, with a bay added in 1864 and a central front door that has been blocked and converted into a window. It has been extended in the 20th century. The structure is made of red brick in Flemish bond and is topped with handmade red clay tiles. It features a double-range plan facing southwest, with a stack in each parapet gable and a single-storey extension added to the rear left in the 20th century.
The building stands two storeys high with attics. On the ground floor, there is one late 19th-century bay containing three sash windows with two over two lights, topped with a parapet and stone coping, alongside three additional sash windows of the same style with flat arches made of gauged brick. The first floor has five similar sash windows in their original openings. There are three 20th-century casements in dormers with segmental roofs. A wooden plaque on the front elevation is inscribed with "1773." Notably, there is no front door, and the cornice is moulded and dentilled, with the parapet having been rebuilt in the 20th century.
The rear elevation features one original sash window with six over six lights and a segmental arch on the ground floor, along with three similar original sash windows with some handmade glass on the first floor, and one 20th-century casement in a similar original opening. Additionally, there is one inserted 20th-century window with fixed lights at half-height and two 20th-century casements in flat-roofed dormers. The rear elevation also displays some blue headers that are not arranged in a regular pattern.
