Description

38 Ingrave Road is a former bishop's residence that has been converted into an office. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of yellow brick with stucco dressings and slate roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan with a single-storey service block in the internal angle.

The exterior features two storeys. The east front elevation has three bays, with giant stucco pilasters that rise from a podium to a parapet, which conceals the roof. The central bay on the ground floor is recessed and includes a flat-headed porch with a parapet and entablature, supported by Tuscan pillars on stylobates. The doorway has a rectangular fan-light and a two-leaved door with four panels, the upper two of which are glazed. The windows in the outer bays have stucco dressings with console brackets supporting hoods. On the first floor, there are three plain sash windows. A stack is visible behind the parapet above the northern bay.

The northern elevation, facing Queen's Road, has three bays similar to the east front, with four giant stucco pilasters between the podium and the parapet. The eastern two bays feature plain sash windows on both the ground and first floors. The western bay has a slightly projecting capped stack and plain windows on both floors, which were replaced in the 20th century. A stack is also visible from the front between the central and eastern bays.

The rear, or western elevation, has a plain two-window range, including a pair of French windows with steps leading down. On the first floor, there are two plain sash windows. To the south, the single-storey service block is set back and has three small casement windows from the 20th century. The south elevation is irregular, with a large inserted multi-casement metal window and a small sash window with glazing bars on the ground floor. The first floor has a central large window with a fan-light that has been altered to include an inserted doorway and fire escape stair, and a sash window with glazing bars to the west, along with an inserted 20th-century double casement window to the east. The service block to the west has one ground floor and two first-floor sash windows, each with three by four panes.

The interior is essentially plain, featuring a stairwell at the rear of the central bay that is top-lit, with a refined shaped handrail and cast-iron balusters in a rinceau form. The rooms include some simple plaster ceiling decorations and internal folding window shutters.
