Description
1 University Gardens in Hillhead, Glasgow, is a building designed by Robert Ewan between 1902 and 1903. It is a three-storey and attic corner block featuring Renaissance details. The structure has three by two bays, with a single-storey building at the rear and a square, projecting, canted corner bay topped with a modillion cornice.
The elevation facing Hillhead Street includes a single-storey, projecting porch that has a cornice and a balustraded parapet. The windows are keyblocked and corniced, with single and bipartite designs above, and the upper floors feature architraved windows. A pedimented dormer breaks through the parapet.
The corner bay has a first-floor window that is pedimented, with a balustraded balcony below. Above, there are bipartite windows with a sculpted tympanum and a finial in the attic, all under a mansard roof.
On the elevation facing University Avenue, the canted bay rises from the ground to the first floor in the second bay from the east, with panelled aprons and a pediment at the first floor. Above, there are bipartite windows with a keyblocked, pedimented dormer featuring a finial. The first bay from the east has a keyblocked, pedimented window on the first floor.
The building features timber sash and case windows, piended slate roofs, and corniced mutual stacks. The interior, as seen in 1988, includes a mosaic entrance hall floor and leaded lights with stained glass in the west porch.
The boundary walls are coped, with a small curved section of cast iron railings to the left of the entrance, although other railings are now missing.
