Gatepiers And Railings Quincentenary Gates, University Of Glasgow, University Avenue, Glasgow

The gatepiers and railings at the University of Glasgow, located on University Avenue, were designed by A.G. Thomson in 1889, with the Quincentenary Gates created by A. Graham Henderson in 1952, featuring ironwork by Thomas Hadden & Co. The structure includes a coped boundary wall topped with cast-iron railings. The circular ashlar piers exhibit banded rustication and conical heads with finials, along with small niches facing each direction at Pearce Lodge. There are square-plan sandstone gatepiers for the vehicular entrance, which are complemented by lower gatepiers and quadrant walls for the flanking pedestrian entrances. The vehicular entrance features decorative two-leaf wrought-iron gates, while the pedestrian entrances have single leaf gates.

The gatepiers and railings include arrow-headed cast-iron railings. The Quincentenary Gates are marked by gatepiers with dated caps reading '1451' and '1951', and they are adorned with cast iron lion and unicorn finials. The decorative wrought iron gates incorporate 30 escutcheons, with the flanking pedestrian gates designed similarly.
