Description

The gate piers, gates, walls, and railings at the south entrance to Eggleston Hall were likely built around 1827 by Ignatius Bonomi, with the gates dating to approximately 1851, sourced from the Great Exhibition. The lock features the founder's mark of Bayliss, Jones and Bayliss from Wolverhampton. The structure includes ashlar piers and coursed squared sandstone walls topped with ashlar coping, along with wrought and cast iron vehicle and pedestrian gates.

There are two tall piers that have plinths, rustication, an entablature with a dentilled cornice, and stepped coping. Lower flanking piers, which have corner pilasters and pilasters on the outer face of the main piers, support entablatures that form the lintels of the pedestrian entrances. Quadrant dwarf walls flank the gateways.

The tall vehicle gates feature cast iron horizontal bands adorned with floral and diamond decorations, while the arched wrought-iron panels display water-leaf and rose motifs. The top wrought-iron decorative panel, styled like an overthrow, is split, with the central coat of arms and scrolled top attached to the left gate. The pedestrian gates also have similar horizontal bands with additional panels showcasing heavy floral cast-iron patterns.
