Description
The walls, gate piers, and gates to the north of Eggleston Hall are a Grade II listed structure, likely built in the late 18th century for Timothy Hutchinson. The garden wall is made of coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings and features two piers and wrought iron gates. The wall stands approximately 3 metres high, has a battered design, and is topped with inward-tilted flat stone coping, forming the boundary along the north and west sides of an irregularly-shaped garden. There are flat stone lintels above three boarded doors, with one located on the west side and two on the north side.
The entrance to the churchyard is positioned at right angles to the south end of the west wall and features two banded domed piers. The westernmost pier is attached to a curved wall that is about 4 metres long and 1 metre high. The gates are adorned with spike-headed uprights and urn finials. Historically, the churchyard was noted to be part of Timothy Hutchinson's botanic garden, as referenced in Mackenzie and Ross's "Historical, Topographical and Descriptive View of Durham" published in 1834.
