Description
Eastwood Churchyard, located at 200 Thornliebank Road in Thornliebank, is a cemetery that developed around the site of an early church and served as the parish churchyard until 1781. A rubble wall partly defines this area of rural kirkyard, enclosed in the 18th century, specifically to the south of the current main driveway. Several 18th century headstones remain, along with the burial aisle of the Maxwells of Pollock, which is likely early 18th century, rectangular in plan, made of ashlar, and possibly originally connected to the church. Its northern wall may not be original. The south wall features an architraved doorway and a finely crafted marble sculptured panel on the east side, set within bolection moulding, possibly a modification, and topped with a pediment. Nearby is a memorial to Robert Woodrow, who died in 1794, described as "Minister of Eastwood/The Faithful Historian/of the sufferings/of the/Church of Scotland/from....1660/to1688." This memorial is set in an Egypto-Greek monument designed by Mossman, likely influenced by Alexander Thomson. There are also a pair of wide low stones, the earlier one dating to around 1831, commemorating the Colledge family of Auldhouse. The cemetery has 19th century extensions in three directions, with a road at the fourth. It features an extensive series of stone monuments, including a tall granite memorial to John Campbell, who died in 1903, and a stone and cast-iron Smith monument from around 1851. The main gateway appears to be from the later 19th century, with chamfered ashlar square piers topped with ball finials, wide inner flanking pedestrian gateways, and cast-iron gates and railings. The perimeter walls are built of rubble.
