Description

The building at 230 Auldhouse Road, Glasgow, is a purpose-built drill hall constructed around 1920. It has undergone some partial demolitions at the rear and has seen later 20th century alterations to the west gable. This largely symmetrical, two-storey, five-bay structure is made of rendered brick and features an Arts and Crafts style.

The principal south elevation showcases a central three-storey entrance bay that projects forward and is topped with a crow-stepped pediment. This entrance bay is flanked by single bays that feature red sandstone dormers in a Dutch gable style, as well as rounded corner bays capped with conical lead roofs. The first floor slightly overhangs, with a dentilled detail creating a string course. The side elevations are gabled and have irregular window patterns, while the rear elevation includes first-floor windows. A later 20th century stair tower has been added to the west gable elevation.

The windows consist of multi-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, and the entrance doors are also made of timber. The slate roofs have overhanging eaves and cast iron rainwater goods, while the conical roofs are finished with lead and topped with thistle finials.

At the front, there are a pair of rendered brick circular gatepiers topped with conical stone caps, and the railings are plain and date from the later 20th century.

The interior of the building was observed in 2015, revealing that the internal room layout remains largely unaltered, with a hall space located at the rear of the upper floor. A ground floor room features a panelled timber fireplace. The original stair was removed in the 1980s and replaced by a later external stair tower on the west elevation, while a plain timber stair leads to the attic floor.
