Description
The Palace of Art, located in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, was designed by Thomas S. Tait and Lancelot Hugh Ross in 1938 for the Empire Exhibition. This large building primarily consists of halls arranged around an open square courtyard. The west front features a tall main range with a series of large, vertically-proportioned and horizontally-glazed rectangular openings separated by plain columns. At the center, there are three doors and a wide staircase, while flat-roofed low ranges at either end are set slightly forward. The main wall is shallow recessed above and includes flagpoles. The other ranges around the courtyard are slightly lower, with a large exit located centrally on the east wall. The structure is built from square concrete blocks, with some details featuring colored tiles, and the roofs are mostly covered with profile sheeting, complemented by an extensive series of large rooflights. Decorative wrought-iron elements, including lamp brackets, can be found at the main staircase.
