Description
The former Palace of Engineering, located in Prestwick and built between 1937 and 1938 by Launcelot Ross with Thomas S Tait as the supervising architect, was moved to its current location in 1941 from the 1938 Empire Exhibition. This massive, rectangular-plan, Art Deco building, which is now used as engineering works as of 2010, features a near-symmetrical design with advanced, lower, curved extension wings on the front elevation (south) and a further flat-roofed extension to the left. It has a steel frame and is predominantly clad in white aluminium with contrasting blue details. The building includes horizontal strip windows on the left and right wings and some curtain walling on the extension. There are also later additions from the 1940s, including single and two-storey red brick structures to the west, north, and east, as well as a single-storey entrance extension on the front elevation to the left.
The entrance elevation (south) features a central, large symmetrical rectangular entrance bay with a contrasting inset panel that includes six fixed strip windows and a slightly advanced single-storey porch. This is flanked by advanced, lower, round-ended wings. To the far left, there is an additional advanced, lower block with a curved stair tower that has a round end.
The building predominantly has replacement metal and plastic windows, most of which are fixed, with some top-opening. The roofs are mostly flat.
Inside, as seen in 2010, the main hall is a large open space with gantry machinery, and there is a timber staircase leading to the left wing, which has been converted into office space.
