Description
The South Western Social and Recreation Club, located at 20 Corkerhill Gardens in Glasgow, is a classical country house built around 1820 in the style of David Hamilton. The building has two storeys and three bays, featuring Greek revival ornamentation, including a fluted Doric porch and simplified acroteria on the ground floor window pediments. The front elevation, which is dry-dashed, displays a variety of planes with the central bay slightly advanced and prominent giant angle pilasters, each with a plain recessed panel. The painted ashlar architraves and porch are also notable, while the eastern flank is dry-dashed and the remainder of the building is faced with ashlar. The main cornice is unpainted, and there is a blocking course with block pediments over the central and end bays. The sash windows have a 4-pane glazing pattern. The end stacks have been cut down, and the piended shallow-pitched slate roof is enclosed by a blocking course.
To the west, there is a deeply recessed and pedimented single-storey, single-bay flanking wing, while the corresponding wing to the east has been replaced by a large modern hall. The rear wall features a central stair window that was re-glazed in the early 20th century, along with unfortunate modern additions and a brick-walled court.
Inside, the building has been much altered, but some original cornice plasterwork likely survives behind suspended ceilings. There is also a cantilevered stone stair with decorative cast-iron balusters.
