Description
The People's Palace Museum, located at 1 and 1A Glasgow Green in Glasgow, was designed by A B MacDonald, City Engineer, and constructed between 1894 and 1898. This museum features a large winter garden that nearly spans the full width of the southwest rear wall. The building is designed in the Renaissance style and is elaborate, with three stories that are symmetrical, featuring a prominent central section and ends. It is constructed of red ashlar stone and showcases rich sculptural details. The ground floor has arched and channelled detailing, while the first floor is adorned with Corinthian columns and a balustrade. The second floor features statuary, and there is a dome over the center of the roof.
The museum has French roofs, which are slated, over the ends. Inside, there is a grand central staircase that includes art nouveau detailing in its wrought-iron balustrades.
The winter garden is a massive structure, fully glazed above a red ashlar base, with cast-iron and steel framing. It has a curved end, which is D-shaped in plan, and features decorative cast-iron columns and brackets inside, along with latticed steelwork. Additionally, paired stair and lift shaft turrets were built against the rear wall of the museum between 1988 and 1990, replicating the brick and red sandstone of the original structure.
