Description

72 Charlotte Street in Glasgow is a building designed by Jack Coia in 1963, representing the Modern Movement style. It features a corner site with both four-storey and single-storey flat-roofed sections, along with a basement. The concrete frame is partially exposed, with blue-black brick infill and panels. The building has horizontal windows in steel frames, including a clerestorey and casement windows.

On the south elevation facing Greendyke Street, there are seven bays with stair windows located in the fifth bay from the left, which are recessed above the ground floor. The ground floor is primarily brick, featuring a clerestorey for the basement bays on the right, along with a segmental fanlight above the stairwell. There is a doorway on the outer left and a clerestorey at ground floor level. The first floor has generous horizontal windows for the classrooms, while the second and third floors include balconies with bevelled cantilevers and horizontal glazing, as well as recessed clerestorey lights. A cantilevered canopy roof extends over this elevation.

The east elevation facing Charlotte Street includes a single-storey and basement gymnasium section on the right, which is situated on rising ground. This section mirrors the detailing of the south elevation at ground level, with a basement clerestorey. There are two large windows that extend from the south elevation to the outer left at the first floor, featuring deep clerestorey windows for the gymnasium in the center and under the roofline on the right. The single-storey linking bays on the outer right are recessed and have a flat roof, with two-leaf glazed doors and a curved brick stairwell that serves the basement only up to ground floor height. The second and third floors are characterized by continuous bands of concrete, brick, and clerestorey.

On the north elevation, the second and third floors rise above the gymnasium roof and are detailed similarly to the south elevation, excluding the recessed bay of stair windows. The west elevation is abutted at the ground and first floors by a TA hall, while the second and third floors are detailed like the east elevation.

Inside, the building features a tall gymnasium and a galleried hall in the north section. The four-storey section contains changing rooms, classrooms, and home economics rooms. The floor plans are dominated by brick stairwells, with minimal corridors. The interiors have black tiled floors and boarded timber ceilings. A varnished timber screen extends from the basement floor to the roof height along the stairs. Additionally, there is a mural frieze from 1965 with an Elizabethan theme located in the school hall.
