Description

The building at 13, 15, 17, 19, and 21 James Morrison Street in Glasgow was designed by architect R A Bryden in 1875 and originally served as a Home for Destitute Children. It has since been converted into flats and is situated on a corner site at James Morrison Street and St Andrews Square. The structure is four stories tall, with attics and a basement, and features polished ashlar stonework that is channeled at the ground level, with simplified vermiculation at the basement.

The building has eight bays, with the elevation facing St Andrews Square being narrower. The first and sixth bays on James Morrison Street have bipartite windows. There are steps leading to a newly created doorway in the former window opening of the fourth bay on St Andrews Square, topped with a six-pane fanlight. The original door opening in the eighth bay has been converted into a window to match the others. A new door opening has been formed in the second bay, complete with a fanlight that matches the depth of the original in the sixth bay at 13 James Morrison Street.

Most of the windows are single light, with bipartite windows above the original entrances in the first and sixth bays for emphasis. The tall ground floor windows are accented by simply moulded lintels, while the original sash and case windows have been replaced with tilt-and-turn types featuring ten-pane glazing, and eight-pane glazing on the third floor. There is a band course above the ground storey, with cill bands on the first, second, and third floors. The eaves cornice remains, although the wallhead stacks were removed during the conversion to flats. The roofs are slate, pitched at the corners, and include newly formed round-headed dormers and skylights, with a semicircular central dormer facing James Morrison Street. The rear elevation is constructed of brick.
