Description

Tent Hall, located at 21 Steel Street in Glasgow, was built in 1876 and features a design that blends Late Gothic and Early Renaissance styles. The building serves as a large meeting hall with associated rooms, constructed from snecked ashlar stone with polished dressings.

The facade facing Turnbull Street is symmetrical, showcasing a shallow projecting central bay flanked by outer bays. Each of these outer bays contains a depressed arch-headed door beneath rounded mouldings and a window above. The wide central bay features five single lights at the ground level and a large three-light window in a shallow corbelled projection above, which is topped with a blind balustrade. The corners of the building are accentuated by corbelled square turrets.

On Steel Street, the building has seven bays, with bipartite windows on the ground floor and triple lights in the gallery. The central light in the end bays is pointed, and these bays also feature crowstepped gables. A central door is present, along with a crowstepped chimney gablet that displays the date 1876. The roof is made of slate.

Inside, the hall is large and galleried, supported by an arcade of iron shafts along the sides, which feature haunched flat arches. The frieze includes shields and corbels that support the ribs of the inserted ceiling, and there is a dentil cornice.
