Description
15, 17, 19 Saltmarket in Glasgow is a tenement block designed by Sir J J Burnet between 1899 and 1900, showcasing a simplified Scots Renaissance style. The building features a gabled design and consists of four storeys with an attic, presenting an eight-bay symmetrical façade. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone.
The ground floor accommodates shops, with entrances to the upper floors located in the narrow, advanced third and sixth bays, framed by architraves that include a bull's eye above. A cornice runs along the ground floor, interrupted by balconies above the doors. The windows are either single or bipartite, with corbelled canted windows on the second floor in the second, fourth, fifth, and seventh bays, while the outer windows extend up to the third floor. There is a cornice above the second and third floors, and gable dormers are present in the outer and central bays. The attic features one window with Jacobean decoration in the gable, and a pedimented dormer with a pyramidal roof is situated above the entrance bay. The roof is slate-covered.
To the north, there is a bar with an elegant arched timber bar front, an angle door, and a return bay. Some elaborate engraved glass remains, particularly facing Saltmarket. Unfortunately, the crowning balustrade has been removed. The interior is sensitively fitted, preserving the gantry behind the bar and the chimney piece.
