Description
The building is a museum located at 1 High Street in Elgin, designed by Thomas Mackenzie in 1842, with additions made in 1896 and further alterations and additions by A Marshall Mackenzie and Son in 1920. It features an Italianate style, constructed entirely of polished ashlar stone, with a channelled ground floor.
The museum rises through two storeys and includes a three-stage square tower on the east side, topped with a shallow pyramidal roof and three round chimneys connected by coping. A square central porch is located at the front (south gable), with three tall round-headed windows above a moulded cill course. A band course at the springing of the windows continues across the tower. To the right, there is a single-storey wing with lunette clerestory windows on the north and south sides.
On the south elevation of the tower, the first-floor window features a blind balustrade, pilaster strips, and a bracketed cornice. Below, there is a lunette at the base of the third stage, with three tall round-headed windows above, two of which are blind. The east elevation mirrors the south but has a blind first-floor window and lunette.
Inside, the original main hall has a gallery on three sides, accessed by a T-plan staircase. The original colour scheme was restored in 1979. An additional hall was added to the north in 1896, constructed of rubble and featuring a top light. The Museum Hall, dated 1921, is a single-storey structure made of ashlar, with some channelled pilasters and a corniced entrance on the south elevation.
