Description
Braco's Banking House, located at 7 High Street in Elgin, dates back to 1694. This three-storey building features a symmetrical three-bay facade, constructed with harled walls and ashlar margins and dressings. The ground floor is arcaded, showcasing three round-headed arches supported by squat pillars with square, cushion-type capitals that exhibit primitive Ionic details. The arcade and window margins are adorned with roll moulding, and the windows are fitted with 12-pane sashes.
On the second floor, the windows in the outer bays are raised through the eaves, each topped with a scroll-decorated stone pediment. The pediment on the right (west) is dated 1694 and initialled I D, while the left (east) features a star (of Innes) and is initialled M I. Crowsteps, initials, and the date are also repeated on the skewputts.
The building has gable end stacks with deep roll-moulded chimneyheads and is topped with a graded stone slab roof and a stone ridge. At the rear, there is a two-storey, single-bay wing with an entrance at the re-entrant angle. The wall line is irregular in the pend, and the roof is supported by three heavy corbel stones, featuring a single swept dormer on the west side.
