Description

St Alphonsus' Roman Catholic Church, located at 217 London Road in Glasgow, was designed by Peter Paul Pugin of Pugin and Pugin and completed in 1905. This large Gothic church is constructed from rock-faced red ashlar and follows a variant of a standard design used in West-Central Scotland. The church features a gable facing the street, with a low porch and three tall traceried windows above, along with a circular gable window. The asymmetrical flanking transepts, which are two stories high, front the side aisles and display Gothic detailing. The main roof is steeply pitched and covered with slate, accented by red ridging tiles. Inside, the church has a plain open timber roof and aisle arcades supported by granite piers, along with a pinnacled reredos.

At the rear of the church, facing Stevenson Street, is the presbytery, which has a datestone from 1902. This three-story building is also designed by Pugin and constructed from rock-faced red ashlar, featuring simplified Gothic detailing. It has an asymmetrical façade with regular bays, an oriel window to the right, and a wall-head gable.
