Description

Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, located within Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow, was designed by J W Simpson and Milner Allen (of London) in 1892, winning a design competition. Construction was completed in 1901, with sculptural elements supervised and partly executed by George Frampton, and contributions from sculptors W Birnie Rhind, E G Bramwell, Johann Keller, A McF Shannon, F Derwent Wood, and A Falkner. The building is a profusely decorated, free classical style museum and art gallery, primarily symmetrical in design, comprising a central block connected by linking sections to pavilions, with square towers positioned at the angles of each section. Roof heights vary, featuring hipped and mansard roofs.

The main structure is built of polished ashlar, banded at ground floor level, with a rusticated basement. The north elevation features 17 unequal bays arranged 1-5-5-5-1, with projecting wings and a prominent central section. A five-storey entrance porch is centrally positioned, accompanied by parapetted side steps and flanking piers. Above the porch, a central sculpture of St Mungo is housed within an arched niche, flanked by sculpted spandrels. The first floor has arched casement windows with six lights. Corner tourelles rise at the third floor, each featuring a central aedicule, a broken pedimented window, and an open, arcaded roof lantern above. Outer bays on the first floor are pedimented, with figure sculpture positioned above, flanked by tourelles.

Recessed linking sections incorporate nine-light casement windows, pilasters, a bracketted cornice, and a balustraded parapet with an obelisk die. The wings exhibit a shallow, bowed ground floor window, a blind first floor, and a balustraded parapet, topped with a thermal window and sculpture.

The west return elevation mirrors the detailing of the north elevation over five bays, including flanking towers.

The south elevation, facing Argyle Street, incorporates a differing central design. A three-bay single-storey porte cochere, arched and divided by pilasters, sits at the head of the steps, with an independent cornice and die parapet. The main three-storey section, advanced and encompassing five bays arranged 1-3-1, is flanked by towers. Mansard roofs top the outer bays, and segmentally pedimented dormers are positioned centrally, flanked by three-light Tuscan column-mullioned windows.

The interior features a double-volume main hall, galleried and lined with ashlar, incorporating coupled, blocked columns.
