Description
Kirkhaven, located at 176 Duke Street in Glasgow, was designed by Peddie and Kinnear of Edinburgh between 1857 and 1858 as the Sydney Place United Presbyterian Church. It is built in the neo-Greek style that was popular among the United Presbyterians. The building features a classical temple front with a portico facing Duke Street, supported by a pair of giant Corinthian columns in antis and flanked by giant clasping pilasters. The central doorway is large and recessed, adorned with a disc architrave, a sculptured frieze, and a tympanum, along with antefixae. A deep entablature extends to the two-storey flanks of the structure. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar with architraved windows and a slate roof. Inside, there is a richly galleried interior. In 1975, the building was converted into a day centre. The left side features a low hall with a severe neo-Greek style, and there is an iron-railed enclosure.
