Description
St Jude's Episcopal Church, located at 278 West George Street in Glasgow, was designed by John Stephen and built between 1838 and 1839 in the Greek Revival style. Originally constructed as an Episcopal Church, it later became a former Presbyterian Church before being converted into offices. The building has a rectangular plan featuring a raised, projecting vestibule and a stair tower. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar, with droved ashlar on the rear and side elevations, and a rusticated basement. It includes sash and case windows with main and subsidiary glazing bars.
The central vestibule is two stories high and is adorned with giant Doric pilasters on all sides that support shallow block pediments, which are decorated with antefixae and acroters. The entrance bays on the right and left sides feature projecting pilastered doorpieces with anthemion and palmette friezes, along with acroterion. Above the doorways are single ramped lugged architraved stair lights, and the central southern door is notably exaggerated, surrounded by a rosette and patera, with consoled and corniced detailing. The vestibule also has incised lettering and a date in the pediment.
In the main body of the church, to the right and left of the vestibule, there are giant ramped, lugged architraved windows with angle pilasters. The return elevations facing Douglas Lane and the western side consist of seven bays, with the northern bay being blind. There is a single bay projection in ashlar with a sculpted frieze and basement windows, along with five single-light windows set on a cill band with block pediments. The second floor features margined windows with dropped cills. The rear elevation has five bays with sash and case windows that include decorative glazing bars. The property is also enclosed by cast-iron boundary railings.
